Idioms/Slangs

Afterbirth - placenta and other membranes that are released from the uterus after birth

  • ex. After the baby was born, the doctor examined the placenta and other afterbirth to make sure it was fully expelled from the uterus.

Baby blues - sadness, moodiness or anxiety after childbirth

  • ex. Sarah experienced baby blues, feeling tearful and overwhelmed by motherhood.

Baby bump - the bump on a woman’s abdomen during pregnancy

  • ex. When Emily walked down the street, people asked to feel her baby bump.

Bun in the oven - a woman who is pregnant

  • ex. The couple announced that they had a bun in the oven!

Crowning - baby’s head is emerging from the mother’s vaginal opening

  • ex. The midwife observed the baby crowning, signaling that delivery was soon.

C-section - Cesarean section, baby is surgically delivered by an incision through the mother’s abdomen and uterus

  • ex. Due to complications during labor, the doctor performed a C-section to deliver the baby.

Due date - expected date of child birth

  • ex. The doctor used Sarah’s last menstrual period to calculate her due date.

False labor/Braxton Hicks - irregular, painless contractions during pregnancy

  • ex. Mary thought she was in labor, but it was false labor because the contractions stopped.

Milk coming in - mother’s breasts begin to produce milk after childbirth

  • ex. Emily felt her milk coming in, making her breasts swollen and tender.

Mommy brain - forgetfulness and cognitive changes experienced during pregnancy and early motherhood

  • ex. Sarah jokes about her mommy brain, because she always forgets her keys.

Morning sickness - nausea or vomiting experienced during early months of pregnancy 

  • ex. During her first trimester, Emily experienced morning sickness every morning.

Quickening - first movements of the fetus felt by the mother

  • ex. When her baby kicked, Sarah finally felt the quickening of her baby.

Water breaking - rupture of the amniotic sac, meaning labor is starting

  • ex. When Sarah got to the hospital, her water broke.
